HUNTING SCENE: Buffalo Hunt, Man Wearing Long Hair Piece on Pinto

Ethnographic Notes

HUNTING SCENE. Diptych, Buffalo Hunt, Man on Pinto Wearing Long Hairpiece Chases Buffalo p. 46 HUNTING SCENE, Buffalo The bison fills the page as it moves left to right, with front legs raised so the animal is diagonal on the page. Two arrows stick from the profiled back, buried to the fletches. No blood runs from the wound or the animals mouth, so this could be the moment of impact. Shaggy hair is drawn on the top of the skull and fringes the front legs. Shading also occurs under the chin and along the top of the hump. The tail rises in an arc. This buffalo resembles the others in this ledger, Plates 2, 8, 9, 19, 24, and 25. Media: Lead pencil outlines, details, and fill Inside back cover: HUNTING SCENE, Man on Pinto The hunter resembles the individual who appears in Plates 2, 14, 15, 16, 22, and 24, except for coloring and hair ornament. This is probably Porcupine himself. The entire image is lead pencil. The mans hair is not indicated, except for shading at the top of his head, but an unusually long German silver hairplate ornament is tied onto the position of the scalp lock. This drags the ground. The man's entire face is striped with dark facepaint (lead pencil). His outstretched left hand holds a quirt, touching the rump of the horse. His right hand holds a small bow and reins of the horse. He wears a cross-hatched shirt, and two pencil-shaded (dark) breech clout flaps show against the saddle blanket. The blanket also is made from Stroud trade cloth, with undyed selvedge edge. The horse rises slightly as it moves diagonally from right to left across the page, parallel to the buffalo on the contiguous page. The horse is outlined in pencil, with ears, reins, and tail details. It has pinto design markings Fill is lead pencil, with the hooves left uncolored. Media: Lead pencil outlines, details, and fill
