HUNTING SCENE. Diptych, Man on Orange Horse with Quirt Chases Buffalo with Arrow
p. 44 HUNTING SCENE, Buffalo The bison fills the page as it moves left to right, with front legs raised so the animal is diagonal on the page. The entire drawing is lead pencil. One arrow sticks from the profiled back, buried almost to the fletch. No blood runs from the wound or the animals mouth, so this could be the moment of impact. Shaggy hair is drawn on the top of the skull and fringes the chin and front legs. Darker shading also occurs along the top of the hump and the back legs. The tail rises in an arc. This buffalo resembles the others in this ledger, Plates 2, 8, 9, 19, 24, and 25.

p. 45 HUNTING SCENE, Man on Orange Horse with Quirt The hunter resembles the individual who appears in Plates 2, 14, 15, 16, 22, 24, and 25, except for coloring and weapons. This is probably Porcupine himself. His loose hair is indicated only on his left, falling behind his shoulder, perhaps because of motion. The left half of his face is painted red. His outstretched left hand holds a quirt, touching the rump of the horse. In ledger art, the quirt indicates speed, as the horseman urges his mount forward. His right hand holds reins of the horse. No bow is visible, but the arrow in the buffalo appears to have come from this hunter. All the other hunting scenes in this ledger show a small bow in the right hand. The man wears a blue cross-hatched shirt, probably gingham or other trade cloth. One blue breech clout flap shows against the side of the horse. It is proportionally too large, and it resembles the saddle blanket of Plate 25. The horse moves from right to left across the page, with all four hooves on the page. The horse is outlined in pencil, with ears, reins, tail details. Fill is orange crayon, with the hooves left uncolored.
