ANIMALS: Four Skunks

Ethnographic Notes

Vertical ANIMALS: Four Skunks Two larger skunks stand with arched tails on the right-hand side of the page. Between them, vertically, are two smaller skunks. All have raised and arched tails, but they are not in attack position (U-curved with face and scent glands both facing the opponent). The larger two may be males, as skunk males are slightly larger than females. These are probably not females with young, since skunks each give birth to litters of two to ten. The animals all are outlined in pencil with prominent stripes down the back. Their arched tails are shaded in to represent bushiness. Their snouts are long, with small ears at the top of the head. Their claws are drawn clearly. They all face the same direction in the same pose. Skunks have associations with medicine (see Plate 9 for discussion of skunk powers and association with war).
