Ethnographic Notes

Vertical COURTING: Man in Black "Skunk" Blanket Sits with Woman In this drawing the man has the woman completely within his blanket for an extended conversation (see Plate 9). The man wears a long German silver hairplate ornament with two red streamers at the end. He wears a red breechcloth flap of red stroud cloth with undyed terminal edge, which shows from under the blanket and identifies his gender, as well as his warriors hair ornament. Hiss leggings are dark cloth with vertical stripe (undyed stroud cloth selvedges). The woman's body is outlined parallel to his under the blanket. Her dark hair shows and red facepaint. One cuff of her sleeve shows, and fingers of one hand. Her one leg is visible, uncolored, with two stripes on her ankles.
