HUNTING: A Man on Foot Hunts Two Blue Beavers with a Rifle

Ethnographic Notes

Horizontal and Vertical on the same page HUNTING SCENE: A Man on Foot Hunts Two Blue Beavers with a Rifle. This action scene shows an abbreviated man in the lower right-hand corner of the page (oriented vertically) shooting at two beavers (oriented horizontally). He hits the larger, probably male, beaver to the left. The man's torso, head, and arms are depicted, but the legs are folded under him or off the page. He has dark hair shaded, but no details of face, ornament, or clothing. He holds a carbine rifle, and an explosion is indicated near the tip of it. A line runs through the guns stock, the length of the mans body, perhaps indicating a hillside or embankment where the hunter concealed himself. Another possibility is this indicates a brace for the gun; however, the cross sticks used for a brace would be two linessee Plate 118 of Arrows Elk Society Ledger (Cowdrey 1999: 158) for a clear illustration of a brace and rifle. The wound on the large beaver has red coloring to indicate blood and a fatal shot. A lead-pencil line shows the trajectory as the bullet goes through the beavers body, and finally the round dot is the bullet. The large beaver, almost a fourth of the page, is rotund with a flat, broad tail. Pencil outlines the body and tail; pencil details are the ears and claws. Both beavers are colored completely blue (crayon). The animals both face away from the hunter, perhaps running away. The other beaver is about half as large of the other, above and behind it. It is identical to the other except for size.
