Three River Otters, Crow, and Hawk

Ethnographic Notes

In a winter scene, three river otters, in Lakota called “uses hands,” (ptan), are shown emerging from a circular opening in the ice covering a river. A crow, kangi, perches in a nearby tree to scavenge any fish scraps left by the otters; while a dark-phase hawk, cetan, soars overhead (Buechel, 1970: 447; 283; & 130).
