Hunting a young, “spike elk” whose antlers have just begun to branch. In Lakota, a mature
elk stag is called “branching antlers” (hehaka); but a young male elk is “little forked antler,” (heslatkala,---Buechel, 1970: 171 & 173).The distinctive profile identifies the firearm as a Spencer carbine. In other drawings throughout the ledger it reappears in Black Road's hands.
