Riding a handsome, black and white, tobiano paint gelding, Black Road is again in courting dress to perambulate the village. His black felt hat, also shown in Plate 67, was possibly captured from a U.S. soldier, since the red stripe on his leggings indicates they are cut down from a pair of standard-issue artillaryman's trousers. The hat is now tricked out with an eagle tail feather, the symbol of a first coup. A golden eagle tail fan adds to his imposing appearance.
