COURTING: Man on Blue Horse Greets Woman in Black-and-White Striped Blanket with Red; Bank Page

Ethnographic Notes

Left: Blank Right: A man on a blue horse with outstretched arm rides toward a woman in a black-and white-striped blanket with red markings against the white stripes, perhaps tassels. Their formal dress suggests courtship. The man wears a black shirt, red pants or leggings, and both tails of his clout show black and edged in white (stroud cloth selvedge). His hair is tied with red cloth into what appears to be one braid or bundle. The lower part of his face is painted with three vertical stripes, up to where his eyes would be. His left hand has fingers, painted black, spread out, but the hand holding the horse’s reins is not depicted. The woman’s face is painted similarly, with two vertical red stripes visible. Her hair appears to be unbound reaching behind her to the left. She is tightly wrapped in the black-and-white blanket from neck to mid-calf, and three stripes (trails) are drawn around her ankle. The blue-colored horse is not decorated; its tail is unbound. Penciled details are the ears, reins, and tail. Media: Pencil outlines and details; black ink; red water color; blue crayon
