“this man [Rut] he has been fight” (Artist’s inscription, verso)
“This drawing is another example of Arihotchkish's and Tom Smith's influence on each other. Like drawing Nº31, the work depicts a mounted Arikara warrior charging two Sioux warriors. The subject matter and the composition are the same, only the details differ: here the one Sioux warrior is not wounded and the shield and lance are different. The Arikara warrior in this case is completely hidden behind his shield. Bent low over the horse's neck with his shield protecting his left side, the warrior is in the classic position for charging an enemy on horseback.” (p.23)
