The buffalo Dreamer depicted here appears in transformation and a state of power, as shown by the blue, yellow, and red lines emanating from their body. The drawing is a near copy of a the right-hand figure in the Walter Bone Shirt ledger book at the Detroit Institute of Arts, 81.233.3B. The added English caption reads “Witches Playing with Their Baby, and in Dakota: “Wínyan Niopapika Hohsiglula skata”.
Page 60: Thunder Being – hand drum image attributed to Siyosapa
The image of the Thunder Being on this page is a direct copy of the painting of a transformed, winged and horned figure on a Hand Drum attributed to Siyosapa (Black Chicken) (Hunkpapa/Yanktonai), Collected at Fort Peck, Montana in 1885, now at the Detroit Institute of Arts (1997.109). As detailed by David Penny,* this hand drum is one of 4 attributed to Siyosapa that related to the Buffalo Dreamer in different states of transformation and power.
