COURTING: Man in Dark "Skunk" Blanket Stands with Woman in Red Blanket

Ethnographic Notes

Vertical COURTING: Man in Dark "Skunk" Blanket Stands with Woman in Red Blanket The man is in profile and in front of the woman, whose body is sideways in profile, but she turns so her full face shows. This is one of the few instances of frontal view in the four 1879 Dodge City Northern Cheyenne ledgers. The man wears a short silver hairplate ornament with a trailer that falls below his feet on the page. Three this lines project upwardly from the scalplock as well. He wears a two-sectioned hairpipe breastplate. His braids are wrapped in otter fur with dangling ends. His dark blanket with white stripe down the middle (undyed selvedges sewn together), or skunk blanket (see Plate 9 for further discussion and references). His leggings are beaded in the black (or blue)-and-white blocks of warriors. His breech clouts are red stroud with undyed terminal edges. The womans nose is drawn, and she wears an orange blanket. Most of her body is covered by the mans. Her leggings are dark with a white vertical stripe up the shins.
