COURTING: A Woman in a Blue Blanket Faces a Man in Decorated Robe with Tomahawk

Ethnographic Notes

Vertical COURTING: A Woman in a Blue Blanket Faces a Man in Decorated Robe with Tomahawk The woman has hair that flows down her back. Five strands of beads show at her neck. The blue blanket covers her completely except for blue leggings. She has two stripes at her ankles. She faces the man, who wears an uncolored robe with seven horizontal, thin strips of bead or quillwork, in blue and red. The man's long braid is wrapped in otter fur with the split end dangling. He wears a small two-sectioned hairpipe breastplate. His leggings and breechclout flaps show below the blanket, in dark stroud cloth with undyed selvedges creating decorative stripes. The tomahawk floats between the man and woman. It has an elaborate streamer with blue strands attached to a triangular base.
