COURTING: A Man in a Red Blanket Courts Two Women in a Blue Blanket

Ethnographic Notes

Vertical COURTING: A Man in a Red Blanket Courts Two Women in a Blue Blanket The man in the dominant right-hand position wears otter-wrapped braids with the ends dangling. His red blanket is solid except for the undyed selvedge edges sewn together at the seam to create a skunk stripe down his back and along the lower hem. His long breechclout flaps show below his feet in the drawing, and his matching leggings of stroud cloth with undyed selvedgesattire seen in most other plates. The two women wear red facepaint and several strands of necklaces. They are wrapped in one blue blanket with two rosettes sewn onto them at the middle, similar to those on the tipi in plate 6 (see discussion for Plate 6). These have the streamers dangling from the center. The woman in the middle has uncolored or bare legs with three stripes. Her one visible dress tab is dark stroud cloth with undyed terminal edge. The other woman is smaller. She wears blue leggings and two red belt end fringes or dress tabs are visible.
