COURTING: A man in a Bear Paw Blanket Courts a Woman in a Blue Blanket

Ethnographic Notes

Vertical COURTING: A man in a Bear Paw Blanket Courts a Woman in a Blue Blanket. The couple are dressed formally. She is on the right, wrapped entirely in a blue blanket. Several strands of beads show at her neck. One braid is visible falling over her shoulder. Decorative side tabs of her dress, dark with terminal stripe, are visible under the blanket, as well as red leggings and stripes painted around her ankles (see discussion, Plate 7). The mans braid, falling down his shoulder, is wrapped with otter fur, with the end dangling. He wears a choker, barely visible at his neck. His dark blanket has a vertical strip of five beaded or quilled bear paws. Each is outlined in black (heavy lead pencil shading) with red center. The paws are rectangular with three or four claws. Under the blanket the man wears dark leggings with one vertical white stripe. His red breechclout flaps reach below his feet.
