Ethnographic Notes

Vertical COURTING: Woman in Red Blanket, Man in Blue Blanket with Tomahawk The man and woman are arranged with the man foregrounded and the woman on a diagonal above, or behind, him. They face each other. The man has dark-shaded hair (black crayon) and the braid on his shoulder is wrapped in red trade cloth. A tomahawk shows from beneath his solid blue blanket. The weapon has two streamers dangling from the handle. His dark (pencil-shaded) leggings and breechclout flaps are similar to those in previous plates of this ledger (25 and others). The woman has a long, dark (black crayon) braid falling down her shoulder. Her leggings and blanket are made of the same red-dyed trade cloth. Decorative dress edging shows beneath her blanketblack with undyed selvedge edge to create a stripe.
