Family of Six, Striped Skunks

Ethnographic Notes

A family of six, striped skunks, called maka in Lakota (Buechel, 1970: 328). Skunks were often well-fed, their flesh tasty and considered a delicacy by the Lakota.The luxuriant fur, with its bold markings, was often used to make decorative garters. Compare Plate 14.
