Sweatlodge Ceremony

Ethnographic Notes

A diagrammatic depiction of a sweatlodge ceremony, in Lakota oinikaga (Buechel, 1970: 818). The central, 4-sided figure is an overhead view of the firepit/altar, containing five red-hot rocks. Birds standing in the Four Directions are, from upper right: a mature bald eagle, “white on both ends” (anunkasan); an immature bald eagle; a turkey vulture (heca); and either a dark-phase hawk (cetan), or possibly a raven (kangi tanka---Buechel, 1970: 82; 169; 130; & 283). Black Road is documented as a “war prophet” who conducted sweatlodge ceremonies during which he was advised by eagle mentors (Meany, 1907).
