Riding a dapple-grey gelding, the artist stops to chat with a young woman, not his wife. A silver or brass bell is tied under the throat of the horse. This may be the same animal shown in Plate 67. The curious extension forward of one corner of the blanket around his waist is repeated in Plates 23 & 11. This may be Black Road's pictorial convention for indicating a “private conversation.” Compare the composition, and his beaded leggings with Plate 11.
