Stealing a curly-haired grey horse. The campfire of crossed sticks with a heavy column of
smoke, at upper right, and the square blanket on the ground denotes that this is the night bivouac of a White man. The black, Grimsley dragoon saddle suggests that he was a soldier. Black Road has made off with the horse while the man was sleeping, or had stepped aside to relieve himself. The prize is already decorated with eagle feathers. The hat reappears in Plate 10.
