Black Road dressed for courting

Ethnographic Notes

Black Road dressed for courting, wrapped in a double-wide blanket decorated with a beaded, horizontal strip. The long ends of a “formal” breechcloth of red wool hang to the ground. A long string of circular, silver conchos, called hairplates, hangs from his scalplock. A small, clipped black feather is tied to his hair. The black object he holds is the leather cavalry holster for a pistol. Compare Plate 39. Its purpose in this context is unclear.
