Tipi with painted owl glyph

Ethnographic Notes

The great-horned owl and golden eagle figures painted on this tipi were likely intended as a name glyph of the family residing therein. The 1895 Pine Ridge census lists Owl Eagle (Hinhan Wanbli) as an Oyuhkpe band Oglala, born in 1832. He and Black Road (born 1836) were age-mates, and likely grew up together. Black Road probably painted the actual tipi for his friend. Compare Plate 4.
